Meet Matt Skovgard, MD, New Thoracic Surgeon at UCSF
Matthew (Matt) Skovgard, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. He specializes in thoracic surgical oncology, with a clinical focus on lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and mesothelioma, as well as complex thoracic surgical procedures.
Dr. Skovgard received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell, followed by cardiothoracic surgery fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he focused on thoracic surgical oncology. His clinical training also included experience in cardiac surgery and lung transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, affiliated with Columbia University and Weill Cornell Medicine.
During his training, Dr. Skovgard completed a two-year NIH-funded research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he focused on translational chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies for thoracic malignancies. His research has been widely published and presented nationally and has contributed to the advancement of novel therapies toward clinical trials.
Dr. Skovgard subsequently joined the UCSF faculty, where his clinical practice encompasses thoracic surgical oncology, robotic and minimally invasive thoracic surgery, and complex thoracic procedures. In addition to his clinical work, he is committed to surgical education and mentorship and looks forward to contributing to the training of future cardiothoracic surgeons at UCSF.
